Actually it is extremely easy to stream video/audio/pictures from your PC to Playstation 3. Back in the days we used to Download Media...Butn it on CD/DVD and then play it on DVD player, we also had to make sure DVD player supports Divx,avi etc.
Thanks to PS3 Streaming option, its extremely easy now to watch PC content on PS3 without any wires or DVD media.
How it works.
Your PS3 and your PC must be on the Same Network (Lan/Router/Subnet).
Your PC Must have Windows Media Player 11 Installed on your XP Computer.
Turn on PS3 (Make sure its connected with Internet
Now Simply Turn PC, Open up Media player
1. Click on the arrow under the Library ( from Windows media Player)
2. Click More Options
3. Click Library
4. Click Configure Sharing
5. Check Share my Media
6. You should see under share my media an icon ( Unknow device ) this is your PS3
7. Click on it and hit allow.
8. Then click ok.
By default Windows media player Monitor's the "My Videos", "My Pictures & Music" Folder. However you can easily change that, Simply play around with Library option in Media Player.
Now if you go to your PS3, under VIDEOS Option you should be able to see your Computer Name, Select it and you can browse the Files on Your PC (Using PS3). So far i had Success Playing Divx,Avi,Xvid,mpg,mp3,vob (Rename VOB to mpg) formats. if your DVD has .vob files simply rename the extension to .mpg and you should be able to stream DVD's files as well.
if above step's did not work for you. then most likely your Network/Pc Firewall is not letting you connect or maybe you have a Anti Virus Software running. try disabling them.
